The Volcanoes National Park is one of the best places for primate safaris in Africa. This mountainous park lies in the Northern Part of Rwanda. It is one of the top 10 national parks in Africa and it is worthy exploring when you visit Central Africa.
Volcanoes national park ushers you to gorillas in the mist where you’ll have a life time experience getting close to the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Volcanoes national park is among the three national parks that host mountain gorillas in the world. The park is found in east Africa’s tiniest country Rwanda, it host quarter population of mountain gorillas remaining in the world. Most visitors flock in the country for gorilla tracking which has become a leading tourist activity.
The park has 10 habituated gorilla families open for tourism, issuing out only 80 permits per day for 8 persons per gorilla family. The gorilla permits are issued out on first come basis by Rwanda development board or booking thorough a tour operator at a fee of 1500$ only.
Golden monkey tracking
It is another exceptional experience of meeting the enchanting and yet another beautiful primate the wild. Golden monkey tracking is much easier compared to gorilla tracking, the golden monkeys are play ful as they jump from bamboo trees, and they are also colorful in nature. Golden monkeys live in troops and you will be amazed meeting 60 individuals of them. Golden monkey permit are obtained at 100$ from Rwanda development board.
Hike to Dian Fossey grave site
Dian fossey was an American primatologist who spent most of her time in the jungle with the gorillas. Her efforts to put mountain gorillas on the international level have paid off because now the mountain gorilla are no longer critically endangered because of her great conservation skills. Unfortunately she was gunned down by rebels in her cabin1985 and her tomb lies in volcanoes national park. A hike to her grave site to pay tribute is one of the activities you will enjoy in volcanoes national park, along you will be able to spot other wild life feature like bird species and primates like baboons, patus monkeys, golden monkeys, elephants. The hike usually about six hours to the peak of karisimbi and bisoke where her grave is nestled near karaoke research center.
Lake Ngezi Trail
It’s a scenic trail with views on the other part of Virunga ranges in the democratic republic of Congo. Ngenzi trail is one of the shortest about 3 hours to reach the summit of mount Bisoke.The walk around the lake is also usually suggested and in total one would have to use about 7 hours. The lake is small, shallow and the easiest hike in the park. The fee for the Ngezi trek is currently USD$ 55 per person. Trek Permits can be purchased at the Park headquarters at Kinigi at 07:00am on the day of the excursion and no advance booking is necessary.
Besides wild life you can visit the two twin lakes of Burera and Buhondo. The two lakes form islands which can be visit on a boat ride which is best in the afternoon with clear views overlooking the Virunga massif. visitors also get a chance to interact with locals as well enjoy the cool breathe from the lake.
